Dr. Huey-Kang Sytwu appointed as Vice President of NHRI

Dr. Huey-Kang Sytwu took office as Distinguished Investigator at National Institute of Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology and Vice President of NHRI on February 1st, 2018.

Dr. Sytwu received his degree in Medicine from National Defense Medical Center (NDMC) in 1987, and went on to pursue an academic career in immunology research. He received his PhD degree in Microbiology and Immunology from Stanford University in 1997.

Dr. Sytwu is a physician scientist with extensive administrative experience in medical education and public services. Prior to his appointment at NHRI, Dr. Sytwu successfully established a Transgenic Core Facility and integrated a research team working on genetically modified mice for different aspects in biomedical research at NDMC. His laboratory has fruitfully generated more than 30 genetically modified non-obese diabetic (NOD) lines for the dissection of pathogenic mechanisms of autoimmune diseases and published more than 150 articles in numerous prominent journals and received several prestigious awards.

While serving at NDMC, Dr. Sytwu was appointed as Executive Dean and President in 2009 and 2013, respectively. Under his outstanding leadership, NDMC managed to obtain the support of“Program for Promoting Teaching Excellence Universities”for NT$ 100 million by Ministry of Education and raised more than NT$ 50 million from NDMC alumni in 3 years, allowing the university to expand its teaching and research capability during unfavorable times.

Dr. Sytwu will work closely with President Liang to assist him in overseeing the operation and research development of the organization, and to lead NHRI’s scientists and staff members in advancing medical sciences for better health and welfare.
